A cast iron crankshaft is made by pouring molten cast iron into a mold to form the crankshaft's shape, a process known as casting. While cheaper and simpler to produce, cast iron crankshafts are generally considered inferior to forged crankshafts due to a less uniform and weaker grain structure, making them more prone to fatigue and flexing. Cast iron crankshafts are common in lower-cost, lower-load applications, such as some air compressors and high-volume, low-load automotive engines, where their lower material cost and simple manufacturing process are beneficial.
